Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has claimed that a number of American troops were killed after it targeted a compound housing US forces in the Rukban area near the strategic al-Tanf base in south-eastern Syria during the 24th wave of its Operation Nasr 2.

The compound is located near the junction of the Syrian, Iraqi and Jordanian borders and serves as a deployment and support location for US forces operating alongside the al-Tanf base, the IRGC said in a statement carried by Fars News Agency. According to the IRGC, the area is an important node in the US military presence in the region.

The IRGC said al-Tanf, established in 2016, is a small forward operating base used for surveillance, intelligence gathering, special operations and the training of local partner forces as part of the US-led coalition’s mission against Islamic State. It added that the base forms part of the US Central Command’s network in West Asia and is protected by a 55-kilometre security zone.

The statement said the strategic value of al-Tanf lies less in its combat capabilities than in its intelligence role, geographical location and links to the broader CENTCOM command network. It added that the base supports special operations, intelligence collection and coordination with local partner forces, while remaining vulnerable because of its isolated location and reliance on supply lines.

The statement concluded that the strike highlighted the vulnerability of small US military installations in the region and reflected the broader strategic confrontation between Iran and the United States in West Asia.
