Cross Honours Lithuanian Village Lost 50 Years Ago

A cross now marks the former site of Juodupėnai, a Lithuanian village that disappeared from the map 50 years ago. The memorial, beside the road connecting Vilkaviškis and Kudirkos Naumiestis, was blessed in honour of the people who once lived there.

The 2026 commemoration took place in Klausučiai eldership, a local administrative area within Vilkaviškis District Municipality. According to the municipal government, the cross is intended to preserve the area’s history and pass its memory to future generations.

Juodupėnai disappeared 50 years ago, but the source announcement does not provide the exact date or explain why the settlement ceased to exist. It also gives no figure for the village’s former population. The confirmed historical details are therefore limited to the five-decade period and the location of the former settlement.

Although Juodupėnai no longer appears on the administrative map, its name remains connected to a specific place in Vilkaviškis District. The memorial gives people who never saw the village a visible point at which to recognise its history and remember its residents.

The cross was placed within the former territory of Juodupėnai rather than at a separate symbolic location. Its position beside the Vilkaviškis–Kudirkos Naumiestis road creates a lasting marker of the settlement that once stood there.

Vilkaviškis District Mayor Algirdas Neiberka, who attended the commemoration, said such memorials recall the area’s origins and help preserve historical memory.

“Although Juodupėnai village is no longer on the map, its history and the memory of the people who lived here remain,” the mayor said. “This cross is a sign of respect for past generations and a reminder that we must preserve the history of our area and pass it on to future generations.”
