Hi,

I have just realised that the new place that I would be moving to would not have a P2P FTTH Internet connection, but a P2MP one.

The difference between the two is explained in this blog: https://blog.init7.net/de/p2p-p2mp/ (in German)

What stands out for me is that Swisscom is pressing ahead with the use of P2MP even when the Federal court has ruled agains them.

From a user’s perspective, with P2MP a connection is shared between users on the same switch, which is not the case with P2P.

Init7 informed me that a switch in P2MP can be shared with up to 32 parties. This means, that if everyone is using the same connection, the theoretical maximum bandwidth that an individual user can get is 312.5 Mbit/s. Given that’s the theoritical maximum, the actual bandwidth might be closer to 100 Mbit/s than 312.5 Mbit/s.

At my current apartment, I have a dedicated P2P 1Gbit/s connection and I regularly get bandwidth of 500 Mbit/s and it’s constant as I am not sharing with anyone else.

I would like to know what the experience of people with P2MP is, and the bandwidth ranges. Does it hover closer to the 200 Mbit/s range, or is the bandwidth generally better?

  1. It’s not great performance wise, especially if you’re moving into a block. If there’s only a couple of parties performance should be consistent, but I can’t comment on the exact speed.

Also if it ties you to Swisscom, nope, that sucks. They’re terrible and expensive.

  2. I have P2MP with Init7 and consistently measure >5 Gbit/sec – it’s in a village tough and I guess I’m not sharing with that many others.

  3. GPON (P2MP) isn’t necessarily bad. It depends on the other users you share bandwidth with.

Hower, you’re stuck with Swisscom and GPON.
