Fujitsu, Monash University and Australia’s national science agency CSIRO signed a memorandum of understanding on July 28 to advance research, talent development and commercialization in quantum computing, Fujitsu said on August 4.
The agreement is intended to support broader Japan-Australia government cooperation in quantum technologies and to accelerate research, workforce development and industrial applications in Australia. Under the memorandum, the three organizations will collaborate on use-case development in areas including cybersecurity and healthcare, combining Fujitsu’s quantum technologies, Monash University’s research and education capabilities, and CSIRO’s expertise in translating research into practical applications.
Fujitsu has been developing a hybrid quantum computing platform using superconducting quantum computers and quantum simulators since 2020. The company aims to realize a superconducting quantum computer with more than 1,000 qubits in fiscal 2026.
The latest agreement expands Fujitsu’s quantum efforts in Australia. The company signed a separate memorandum with the Australian National University on July 4, 2024, to promote innovation and talent development in quantum computing. The new pact broadens that initiative through a university-industry-government framework involving Monash and CSIRO. Fujitsu noted a July 27 Japanese government announcement covering cooperation in quantum science, technology and innovation between Japan and Australia.
Fujitsu has supported customers in Australia for more than 50 years. Monash University is based in Melbourne; CSIRO is headquartered in Canberra.
Quantum computing has become a focus area for governments and research institutions pursuing advances in optimization, materials science and cybersecurity. Japan and Australia have both stepped up efforts to build domestic research capacity and connect academic work with industrial applications.
