The Axios report follows an earlier report by CNN, which stated that the Trump administration may have underestimated Iran’s ability to attempt to shut down the crucial strategic Strait of Hormuz in retaliation for the US military strikes.

A CNN report citing sources stated that while planning the military operation, officials at the US Department of Defense and United States National Security Council did not expect Tehran to affect the waterway. However, the US military had long prepared backup plans for such a situation.
