Most common surnames in Spain in every area. One of these is probably your surname.

  1. Catalanes: somos un pueblo independiente, que no tiene que ver con el resto de España y por eso tenemos que ser tratados de manera diferente.

    Mientras tanto sus apellidos…

  2. Interestingly, “Martinez” is the surname with more territorial fragmentation (regions where Martinez is the first surname don’t touch each other).

EDIT: funny, the same happens with “Martin”, which is the root of “Martinez”. And Rodríguez as well.

  3. I know up to 8 of my last names and none of them are on that chart.

Also that’s an interesting color choice for Pérez. Looks like a “no data” color.

  4. Garcia is the most common surname in spain, coming from the basque surname “gartzea” originally from the navarre kingdom long time ago

  5. Pues es raro porque yo nunca he conocido a nadie con el apellido Mohammed. Los apellidos marroquíes más comunes que he oído son Idrissi y Haddid. Jamás he conocido a un Mohammed.

  8. Heh interesting, i have to go to my fourth surname to find any of the ones in the list. As an interesting detail my second surname only has like 10 people in Spain and 60 worldwide, and i can trace back from who i come to a Charlemagne noble/adviser that was the one that made up the surname haha

  9. That they are the most common doesn’t mean that the most common thing is to have one of them. It would be interesting to look statistics but if I had to guess less that 20% of Spaniards have one of these.

  10. Why does it seem there’s only about a dozen very popular Spanish surnames. Meanwhile other countries have seemingly much more variety?

  11. Not very color blind friendly. I basically just see Garcia Martinez, Martinez Rodriguez Fernandez, Lopez Martin Perez, and Sanchez Mohamed (maybe Perez). Gonzales stands out, because I think it’s only Canarias, and the biggest portion is Garcia?

Edit: I can see the difference in color if they are close to each other and occupy a bigger area, because they have a different hue, but most of the colors look the same to me on the chart to the left.
