Pope Leo XIV will make an apostolic journey to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru from November 6 to 17, 2026, the Holy See Press Office announced. Vatican News reported that the visit will be the pontiff’s sixth international trip since his election.
According to Vatican News, Pope Leo will visit Montevideo, Paysandú, and Florida in Uruguay from November 6 to 8; Buenos Aires, Córdoba, and Luján in Argentina from November 8 to 11; and Lima, Chiclayo, Cusco, and Pucallpa in Peru from November 11 to 17.
The Vatican said the detailed program of the apostolic journey will be released at a later date.
As Vatican News noted, Uruguay has the smallest proportion of Catholics in Latin America, with Catholics accounting for about 36% of the country’s population.
The visit to Argentina will be particularly significant, as it is the homeland of the late Pope Francis. Despite serving as pope for 12 years, the Buenos Aires-born pontiff was unable to return to his native country during his papacy.
Peru also holds special significance for Pope Leo. As Vatican News reported, he first arrived in the South American nation as a missionary in the 1980s, later served as a bishop there, and became a Peruvian citizen.
The 11-day trip across three countries underscores Pope Leo’s continuing pastoral outreach to the Church in Latin America, a region with deep Catholic roots and diverse pastoral challenges. It will also mark his return to Peru, where much of his missionary and episcopal ministry was shaped before his election to the papacy.
