The potential expansion of unconventional extraction represents an effort to reduce the country’s reliance on natural gas imports from the United States.

Big Oil Profits Surge as Iran Conflict Drives Energy Prices

Major international oil companies continue to report surging earnings as conflict in Iran disrupts shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz, driving crude and refined product prices significantly higher. Six of Europe’s largest energy producers generated US$22 billion in combined 1Q26 profit. While elevated fuel costs continue to exert upward inflationary pressure on global transport and supply chains, the profit surge has drawn sharp criticism from Western political leaders calling for retail price relief.

Unconventional Gas Extraction Panel Findings

Mexico’s Scientific Committee on Energy Sovereignty and Unconventional Natural Gas Deposits recommended not to move forward with hydraulic fracturing in the Tampico-Misantla basin due to environmental and social risk factors, while advising continued viability studies for the Sabinas-Burro-Picachos basin in Coahuila and Nuevo Leon, as well as the Burgos basin in Tamaulipas.

PEMEX 2Q26 Net Profit Reaches MX$18 Billion

PEMEX published its operational and financial results for 2Q26, reporting a net profit of MX$18 billion (US$1.03 billion). Despite remaining in positive territory, the net profit figure represents a 69.8% decline when compared to the amount reached in 2Q25.
