By extension, it almost feels as if some faithful light had just shone over the Texas capital. It’s a bit like watching your nephew get baptized — except your nephew happens to be one of the biggest movie stars of his generation.

Matthew McConaughey met Pope Leo XIV during a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, where the Oscar-winning actor and his wife, Camila Alves McConaughey, greeted the pontiff.

Alves McConaughey shared photos of the encounter on Instagram Wednesday, calling the visit “an honor and blessing.”

“What an honor and blessing it was to be able to share this moment with my immediate family who came all the way from Brasil,” she wrote. “I grew up with my parents’ Catholic teachings of faith, hope and prayer, and today was a celebration of that! Thank you also to Father Paolo Benanti. I learned so much today.”

A video distributed by the Associated Press shows McConaughey shaking hands with Pope Leo XIV before introducing his wife during the audience inside St. Peter’s Basilica.
