“Hematogen”, the popular Russian children’s candy, made with genuine cow blood.

  1. Modern hematogen is not made from cow blood. This technology has become obsolete decades ago.

  2. It’s 95% combination of sugar, condensed milk and other sweeteners, blood is only 5% of the end product. That makes it sweet like hell (otherwise it would’ve been completely inedible) and the damage that comes from the amount of sugar overcomes any possible benefit for your anemia. It’s absolutely forbidden for people with diabetes.

Cow blood is indeed good for human health, but you should rather consume it the other way, like within the sausage or soup. Definitely not with this abomination of a snack.

  3. Wait until people realize blood sausage is actually made with blood…

    And is bloody delicious.

    A blood candy though? Eh.

  4. It’s tasty and nutritious, but also diabetes in a bar. No way I’d let my kids eat it even though I grew up with this.

  5. We in Italy had/have one too! (though it’s not a candy). It’s called “Sanguinaccio”, my parents used to have it when they were kids. Personally, I don’t recall ever trying it but for what they say about it, kids loved it.

  6. Any russian speakers who can help me understand why it’s Hematogen if the first letter is a g? Should it not be Gematogen?
