Don’t be ‘Putin’s friend’, Tobias Ellwood warns rail strikers

Rail union workers striking this week are “Putin’s friends”, Tobias Ellwood has claimed.
The senior Tory MP said that the disruption caused by this week’s industrial action, the biggest on Britain’s rail network for 30 years, was distracting the Government from the war in Ukraine, a fact the Russian president would be “enjoying”.
Speaking to Sky News, Mr Ellwood said: “We face huge economic headwinds yet here we are causing such huge self-harm as the country is brought to a halt.
“I think Russia must be enjoying this self-inflicted distraction, pleased to see that the one government in Europe that is actually standing up to Putin is completely distracted in this way.
“I do hope the unions now call off future planned strikes … this isn’t just disrupting commuters, including key workers, but students as well and indeed the hospitality sector.”
He added: “It’s also Armed Forces weekend this Saturday and that’s where we say thank you to those who serve and have served.
“I say to the unions ‘please don’t be Putin’s friend – return to the talks today so we can get the country moving again’.”

  2. I mean he’s not wrong. Just last year I was playing tennis with some ex KGB heavies. While the people that work under me were taking thousands of pounds from other members of the Russian oligarchy.

Oh wait that wasn’t RMT members that was members of government.

  3. Why would trades unionists be friends of a fascist? Fascists have a long history of murdering trades unionists. Putin really is a Fascist.

All that Moscow Gold goes into the Tory coffers: The real Fellow Travellers of Putin.

  4. What a stupid thing to say. The government are clearly trying to paint the striking workers as against Britain, evil, trying to bring this country down, hurt you and your family etc.

It’s disgusting, and the worst part is that a fair amount of people will buy into this nonsense.

  5. Very healthy for the government, who gets money literally from Putin’s friends, to attack rail workers, who are having their pay slashed.

  6. I always underestimate how low our government and friends are willing to go to get their own way. It reminds of those stories back in 2016 that ISIS wants you to stay/leave the EU.

Come on, Johnson’s hardly on the fucking front-line, is he?!

  8. If Putin invites you to his birthday party say “maybe” but then don’t turn up. If he asks you what you’re doing at the weekend and do you want to maybe do something, say you’ve already got plans. If he tries to organise a group holiday with you and the rest of the lads, say you can’t get the time off work. Setup a group Whatsapp but leave him out of it.

  9. Boris Johnson is friends with an (ex)KGB officer who is on Canada’s sanctions list for aiding and abetting Putin.

And Trade Unions are a vital part of a democratic society and one of the few places workers can go to when they are being screwed over by their bosses.

Putin hates Trade Unions, stop being like Putin and support our Unions!
