How long will it take for them to realise people won’t do a gruelling hard job for shit wages anymore?
These airlines are losing millions from cancelling flights, but are so short sighted that they won’t pay decent wages, which will cost them a small amount, but allow them to continue making their millions. Braindead
Airports and airlines really have fucked themselves over.
Feel sorry for those trying to get away.
Barely any cancellations at Newcastle Airport…probably best to fly from Northern airports instead of Southern for a bit.
Think of all the baggage handlers that are working. Job must be a fucking nightmare. They’re probably on the verge of quitting which exacerbates the situation.
It’s weird, because this is an airport issue, but the airlines will be the ones getting fucked by it to the tune of £250-350 per customer they cancel on.
“We’re having to cancel our flights because our staff are leaving rather than accepting a large pay cut in real terms. Do you think we should stop cutting their pay?”
“Nah, just cancel a few more flights”
The Ryanair business model has ruined the airline industry. They don’t want to pay for anything and this is exactly the outcome. Other airlines have followed suit and wonder why there’s no staff to offload bags or provide the services they require. Granted there is other issues at play, but this is a huge one.
Frankly, good for the staff for performing shittily. They’re not being paid enough (like the rest of us) and I don’t doubt the company is awful to them in general.
Mismanagement by an airline company? Colour me shocked… so, When’s their next bailout?
Everyone in this thread moaning about the airlines, but isn’t this article saying it’s Heathrow Airport itself that is understaffed?
There’s obviously a load of issues going on with the airlines themselves selling more tickets than they can currently serve, but this one seems related to Heathrow not being able to cope with pre-pandemic levels either.
Pay staff more and they’ll work
My dad was delayed an hour at Gatwick yesterday. As annoying as it is, he totally gets it from the staff’s point of view. The airlines need to start paying and treating their colleagues better.
Flying from Heathrow to USA on Wednesday. Already having to contend with a rail strike fucking me and now this
Why do companies find it so hard to pay people properly? Insane the levels they’ll go to before they pay the people who literally allow them to function
I know a couple who get called in to work weekends only on nights as baggage handlers at heathrow. They get triple overtime on the sunday and can make a couple of grand in a week. So it’s not *all* awful pay somehow.
Welp, I go away in 2 weeks and I’m fucked. Can’t really blame the staff though. Imagine taking pay cuts when you already earn pittance for your job.
Ok, Heathrow, how about a 10 percent reduction in landing fees for the airlines?
We flew with ba from heathrow this weekend and they didn’t load a single bag into the hold, we were one of the luckier ones when we arrived and only had a 3 hour wait the to report the missing bags as we were near the front of the queue, others would have had twice this. Zero communication from BA, we only found out after an hour of watching an empty bag belt spin around that they were never coming. The airlines just don’t care though, giving me 150 euros for the clothes I’ve had to buy here is still cheaper for them than cancelling the flight and paying me back for that plus compensation.
I’m past caring now but I hope I get my bag back eventually.
If you are flying soon try and take hand luggage or at least take a few vital clothes in you hand luggage.
I’m flying to the US out of T2 on Thursday to see my Fiance for the first time in 6 months and **OH BOY** am i starting to get nervous. Pay your damn employees and maintenance costs!
I’ve taken a quick scan of both Heathrow and Gatwick’s recruitment page. Neither are recruiting for baggage handlers. I am very confused. There is a baggage backlog, you don’t have enough staff to cover the existing demand but you don’t want to hire more people?
All that fantastic aerodynamic engineering to shift folk round the glob and they can’t move a few suitcases.
Just checked job listing. Pay is £12 an hour to be baggage handler.
‘Nobody wants to work anymore’
They are not even trying to fix problem. But quick to blame the government?!
How much did we give them over the last 2 years? And all the crying about needing to reopen..
Turns out when we make it harder for low paid EU workers to do the jobs we don’t want to do we suffer staff shortages
Hi Heathrow mate i’m off work tomorrow, pay me £250 a day + a hotel and i’ll work 12 hour days working the luggage for you this week.
The great reset 2021: You will own nothing and be happy.
The great reset 2022: You will not fly, and be happy.
I’m flying from Thailand to Heathrow in a weeks time, with the second leg via Lufthansa. I sure to hope they don\t cancel my flight from Frankfurt to Heathrow, considering my passport will run out 3 days after.
Pay the baggage handlers more, you might get the job done quicker.
Tight arse airlines and the food on board is shite.
SUVs and their running costs are strangling the British economy.
