Edinburgh could use this. Every flat door you walk by has those key lock box things. I’m surprise none of the protestors have thought to glue them shut yet.
Good. The sooner homes are seen as somewhere for people to live and not an investment for people to get rich on the sooner homelessness can begin to be tackled.
Ah yes, Brighton a city whose economy is almost entirely tourism. Smart move.
Everywhere could do this with. Down here is terrible. All the richies only popping down for a weekend or 2 in the summer
Good for them.
More places need to follow suit.
Am I being thick how can a council ban somebody from buying a house if they want to it’s nothing to do with the council especially if it’s not going to be used for HMOs
Needs to happen. Tax the hell out of landlords and second home owners to restore some reality to the housing market and stop Britain’s housing stock being a way for people with money to make more money from people without.
I’m supportive of this, but can they do that? Would have thought it’d be a national level law rather than something that can be restricted locally?
I think you should be allowed a second home, you shouldn’t be allowed 10, 20, 100, etc. They’re the problem.
Great!
My girlfriends mate was getting uppity the other day when I told her she’s not working class… she has 9+ properties.
That shit is fucking crazy to me!
How can someone have multiple homes, when some have none, and nothing?? It’s just fucking sickening.
Good! Now let’s make it across the whole country
Surprise surprise “The committee voted eight to two on Thursday (16 June) for officials to carry out further work on the proposed ban, with the Greens and Labour in favour and the Conservatives against.”
Great news, but will it work?
It’s not a ban on second homes.. it’s a ban on new builds being bought off plan as second homes
Could you set up a company to purchase the house with, thus sidestepping the whole two-homes thing?
I was talking to my dad about this the other day. He’s very much centre-left but grew up in the boom years – doing well out of everything the Baby Boomers had going for them. Lovely guy but a bit out of touch with how tough it is for younger generations.
Anyway, when I suggested the idea of a ban on second homes he told me to look at it “like a business”. I told him I didn’t want to think of it like a business, I wanted to think of it like someone who wants to buy a home. They’re the people to keep in mind, not someone who wants a holiday home in St Ives.
We didn’t argue about it or anything, but I don’t think the conversation ended up changing either of our minds.
I hope this goes ‘beyond’ banning second homes and also forces those owning multiple properties to sell up. Otherwise it’s like shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.
Yes! “You can have your seconds (and thirds, and fourths, and…) once everyone else has had their firsts”
I was born in Brighton and grew up nearby. Myself and a majority of my friends from school ended up with no choice but to move away because it became so expensive. A lot of houses were purchased by people from London and most of us got priced out of the area.
Quite disgusting really when a whole generation can’t live where they grew up.
does that apply to companies as well? otherwise it’s pointless
This is just a trial for later in the year when the supermarkets introduce a one turnip per customer rule.
And if the property is owner by a Ltd company, what then?
This will do absolutely zero to help renters in Brighton, of whom I am one, and have £1000 stolen from me every month to live in a modest 1 bed flat.
One of the bigger issues I’ve experienced in Brighton is just how many of the flats and houses here have been turned into AirBnBs. In the Kemptown & East Brighton area it’s a shocking amount of properties. I used to clean them so I’ve seen for myself just how many of these places are just money machines for people who are already rich enough to buy multiple houses to begin with. Some of them were entire 3 or 4 flat conversions that were all split into separate AirBnBs. That’s so many potential living spaces in a city that already doesn’t have any space to build more housing without tearing something down or removing more green space.
To make it worse, the lack of available housing in that area makes rent prices in Kemptown & St. James really high.
Now please do it in the whole uk.
How would this ban actually work? How would this work with individuals human rights to own property and to privacy? What percentage of new builds are used as 2nd homes, and holiday lets?
If they ban second homes in Cornwall the place would empty and U.K. would be able to sell it at knock down price opps sorry Prince Charlie owns most of the place along with all his second homes.
Brightonian here who was priced out of living in their home town.
Sadly this will change absolutely nothing in Brighton as it will only affect new developments. Much central Brighton is listed in one way or another and any brownfields sites within the city are extremely valuable and the outskirts are protected by green belt. It’s not going to help those low wage workers buy in their home town, it’s just going to make it slightly easier for those who can afford the already highly inflated properties to buy.
This is just lip service and it’s 20 years too late.
So a move towards Socialism then?
Question: How are new property businesses meant to grow and become competition for the current property businesses? You need competion for a healthy market, and give people options when buying.
Demand for houses is through the roof because there are 10 million more people here than 10 years ago. You think that has nothing to do with it? I’m all for people coming to make a better life and contribute to their new country, but to pretend thst allowing 300,000 in the last year alone (who will all want houses at some point) doesn’t have an effect on the availability of housing is just ignoring the reality.
Also for the commies out there, if I have worked my backside off and want to own a second home, I bloody well will. Owning a house is owning a commodity like everything else, not a gift to be handed to everyone by the state.
I’m all for people having second homes, just charge them through the nose to have one! Quadruple council tax or more on unoccupied or semi-occupied homes! Use the money to fund building new homes.

Does a council have this power?
