Hej,

I´m currently working in a Danish company and I got an offer to another company here in Denmark.

I´m supposed to come up with a desired monthly salary and I noticed something really weird.

**I´m using this tax calculator to check how much money I would get (liquid):**

[Income tax calculator 2022 – Denmark – salary after tax (talent.com)](https://dk.talent.com/en/tax-calculator)

On the left column it is the gross salary and on the right column it is the salary after tax.

[Table gross vs liquid](https://preview.redd.it/givs4fn62c891.png?width=206&format=png&auto=webp&s=81f09e1355e4cc6b2b0405aa99fe820239f4a470)

According to this website, 47 thousand dkk is the best salary to have. If I ask for 54 thousand dkk then, according to this website, I´ll only have 27683 dkk liquid afterwards, while if I choose for 47 thousand dkk I´ll have 28608 dkk liquid.

This calculator is wrong?

If so, can you please point me to some tool for which I can check this gross to liquid ratio?

Thank you.

  1. It is definitely wrong. I don’t know a tool that can help you though. Ask for the highest salary you can get 🙂

  2. I don’t know this site, but it probaly doesn’t factor in all the tax deductions.

There is so many, but things that might vary a lot, is:

    – Travel (over 24 km per day)
    – Pension
    – Company car

    https://skat.dk/data.aspx?oid=2234504#/indkomst

    – First step, enter you tax procent: depening on your municipality, it’s 37-39% (if I recall correctly, should be able to see this on your paycheck)

    – you tax deduction per month, should also be able to see this on Skat.dk

    – Then next page, you salary per month

if I put mine in, I land on ~34.000

  3. That site does not understand the danish tax system 🙂 It adds “topskat” to the whole amount when you enter the limit of topskat – It should only be added to the amounth above topskat.

Anyway, there is a lot more to the calculation than just that, but it gives you a fair estimate. There is also [hvormegetefterskat.dk](http://hvormegetefterskat.dk) – Its not perfect in any way either, but might give you a little better estimate.

  4. It’s definitely wrong. I don’t know who made that website, but there is a definite “taxes bad” agenda behind it. Look at how it describes how many of “your hard earned money the government takes”.
Try http://hvormegetefterskat.dk/ instead. It uses 2015 taxes rates, but its not like they have changed significantly, so it should give you a good estimate.

  5. I tried it, it’s wrong for me with regards to the take home pay.

A good rule of thumb is that you retain around 60% of your gross pay.

It can of course vary with deductions but it’s an OK ballpark figure.

  6. The tax bracket changes at some point (I guess for that website, it is 47k).

But – what happens at that tax bracket, is that whatever you earn OVER 47k has a higher tax rate. This website applies the higher tax rate to the entire income, which is incorrect.

The more money you can get in your salary, the more money you will get in your pocket after taxes. It will never go the other way.

As other people have said, a good ballpark number is that you keep 60%

  7. If you took a look at your current salary slips from your current work, you can easily see how its calculated, and base your new salary using similar calculation. Instead of that misleading calculator.

And call your union if you are in doubt how much you are worth. To make sure you get the correct salary. They can also look through your previous pay slips to see if everything is calculated correctly.

Either way if you pay too much or too little, SKAT will automatically fix it by the end of the year.
