The Watergate scandal began on June 17, 1972, when five Republican operatives connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters with plans to wiretap. 

After two years of building scandal, Nixon resigned from the presidency on Aug. 8, 1974.

Unfortunately, Nixon was then pardoned by his successor, President Gerald Ford, further cementing the public’s mistrust in the government’s integrity.
