Youngsters trust politicians less than influencers to give truthful news – poll

  1. I’m 32 so class myself as a young(ish) person.

I’ve never once watched an influencer in my life, and anecdotally nobody else my age watches them.

    I can’t name a single influencer.

    Am I just weird?

Or is watching corporate paid shills on YouTube some new generational valley between Millenials and Zoomers?

  2. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure I blame them. Almost everything that comes out of the tory party at the moment is a lie, or as close to a lie as makes no difference.

I’d trust almost *anyone* to give more truthful news than Boris Johnson.

**Edit** – I suppose another point is that kids will tend to go to influencers that agree with their point of view. If they’re left wing, they’ll follow left wing influncers and trust them more than mps, if they’re right wing (or far right, or far left) they’ll do the same.

I imagine most people would say they trust the media source they consume more than politicians.
Do *you* trust MPs more than your newspaper/website of choice? I’d be very surprised if the answer is yes.

  3. For everyone saying influences are paid shills, more often than not what people are watching them for has nothing to do with what they might be aid to advertise.

Nothing to do with politicians but I’m 40 and was watching a lawyer/youtuber’s take on the Johnny Depp trial as that took place. The 30 second manscape ad wasn’t driving their thoughts on the trial.

Their insight into it (the evidence shows Amber was clearly lying) clashed very heavily with the story the news channels were telling (Amber was set up, its a blow to metoo!)

There’s a reason the next generation trust classic news sources and politics less and less.

  4. I trust comedians more than I trust conservative politicians right now. What reason would I have to trust a man that lies all the time and has replaced any half sensible mps with completely incompetent yes men/women, a case for javid could be made I suppose? he has some level of capability, but he’s following along with Boris nonsense so he’s slipped as well.

  5. People don’t seem to get it, too many arrogant people just calling the younger generation out for trusting influencers and drawing a line at who they define as an influencer.

A social media influencer IS someone who creates content online and has an online audience. Not traditional media; newspapers, tv; radio etc. So these are Youtubers, Instagramers etc…

There are problems, true but when you can’t trust someone running the country or traditional media to tell the truth then who can you trust? This is a symptom of a huge problem. The problem of accountability and integrity.

I forge my beliefs from personal experiences and where I see what is “right” and “wrong”.

I listen to media influencers and I read various sources for information, and will I hear what a politician has to say? Sure, usually it’s utter rubbish but I’ve heard what they had to say.

I do not trust traditional media anymore. From the Depp trial more specifically you have seen the very worst of traditional media who I perceive to be choosing to spin a narrative when I watched the trial start to finish I came to my own conclusions but found “influencers” forming the same opinion. That reinforced my opinion more strongly and when I’m hearing news outlets that he sued trying to further defame Depp it’s pretty clear where the bias is.

More so when you realise how much of a part certain dark actors can influence it behind the scenes. That you have large conglomerates like The Sun, The Daily Mail and Fox News controlling narratives. Or an example from a few years ago where [Sinclair Broadcast Group](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_fHfgU8oMSo) had pushed the same speech to all of their news channels to cause division and cast doubt on other media outlets.

With influencers you have different opinions, perspectives, arguments and I value them all and trust some of them more to tell the truth and be honest to admit when they are wrong which a lot of them are.

People assume when they are talking about influencers they’re talking about make-up gurus or people like faze clan and team 10 who a lot of the time do “shill” merchandise and target kids but I don’t watch those people and a lot of people don’t watch them for their political hot takes.

This is not to generalise. There are some good journalists out there that seem to hold politicans accountable when they lie but there are also a lot who do fuck all and actively promote lobbiests and push an agenda that negatively impacts everyone. If governing bodies actually did more against those who lie you might see the trend reverse but given the huge problem of it all. I really doubt it.

TLDR; Stop blaming a symptom and turn your attention on the actual issue. Ask yourself why the younger generations have no trust in traditional media and would rather trust influencers. Without the blanket statement “kids stupid” because it comes across incredibly ignorant.

  6. Because all politicans are lying self-serving scumbags.

    Everyone knows it.
    Everyone just accepts it.

Remove the Party System, reduce their bonuses including allowances and Tax-payer Wine and Salmon, and hold politicians to their Campaign promises.

  7. I mean, yeah, that makes sense. Influencers are celebrities now. People 30 years ago trusted their favourite celebs more than politicians too.

  8. Influencers on YouTube and Instagram are held to a higher standard than politicians.

They have to directly advertise if a video is sponsored or has paid product placement of gifting. Yet Tories (and other politicians) do not have to reveal donors…………

  9. *Dont trust your information from those who have vested interests in such information*

Simple as that. Social media cretins may also have vested interests but certainly not as obvious as those of politicians.

  10. This headline will get a lot of ridicule, but mainly because of a misunderstanding as to what “influencer” means. People seem to think that it refers specifically to a certain type of luxury/beauty/travel vloggers, whereas in reality it is just a catch-all term for any marketing by social media content creators.

If your favourite channel has Audible ad, you are watching an influencer. Manscaped? Influencer. NordVPN? Influencer. Lastpass? Influencer. The money comes out of a budget set aside for influencer marketing because that is what they are.

And given how horrendous the media coverage of the recent controversial trial of Amber Heard was can you really blame someone for trusting a in-depth breakdown by a youtuber over the “professional” media clown show?

  11. This is bad because politicians then just pay the influencers to say positive things about them and spread wide misinformation, like the Ferdinand (Bongbong) Marcos campaign, where the son of an oppresive dictator has been elected due to widespread misinformation on tiktok. Distrust in politicians often results in strongmen outsiders getting elected, like Donald Trump did in America, he was basically an influencer with his twitter account moreso than a politician.

  12. Influencers face regulations and consequences for misleading speech. Politicians done. I’m not surprised.

  13. Who can blame them when the PM is an abject liar?

As Max Hastings said of him “He would not recognise the truth, whether about his private or political life, if confronted by it in an identity parade”

  14. Given that our current prime minister has been repeatedly proven to have lied to parliament and the queen, he has been sacked multiple times for lying previously and more or less the entire governing party backs up these bare faced lies even when it’s blatantly obvious that they are lying.

It’s not exactly a high bar to reach.

  15. I mean, all young people know is governments that constantly lie, opposition that feign opposition and a tendency for horrible inhuman scumbags like Boris Johnson, Priti Patel, Jeremy Cunt and Theresa May to fail their way into more lucrative positions regardless of their quality of work or aptitude for the job…

Those in power can’t be trusted and I’d fucking LOVE it if the youth turned out in force and pushed an alternative to the top, if only just to see what happens.

  16. The problem is, if you hear the word politician, you’ll always associate them with the word liar, politicians can’t help themselves, and they’ve been this way for decades.

I’m not saying I trust influencers at all, especially since most of them wouldn’t dare talk about politics, I don’t religiously follow influences either, or anyone for that fact, but I assume anyone with a following at all is an influencer

  17. I’d have them on near equal levels.

There are a handful of influencers i’d trust to tell 100% of the truth.

And most of them are simply doctors on social media platforms just debunking other influencers

  18. British influencers have to tell you when they’re doing doing sponsored ads otherwise they’ll get Ofcom in their DMs.

Politicians don’t do anything similar in a manner that is easy to digest without going through dozens of dry documents and donation records. And they aren’t even held to account when they don’t do this correctly.

  19. Really you dhiukd trust neither, jared 2481 on tick tock probably knows bugger all about politics, Boris Johnson knows nothing about politics other than how to play it

  20. *GE 2040 – PM Pewdiepie still has no comment on the alleged Christmas orgies held during the 7 day week imposed by the Court of Brexit*

  21. Influencers yeah sure and i trust the tarot cards more.

I don’t trust no fucker even those channels who research the story before talking about it i’m still gonna do my own research if i can be arsed with the story that is.

Half the so called influencers i know off just spout of their own fucking opinions kinda like how i’m always spouting of opinions and yet people on reddit take those opinions to be facts and if thats what kids are doing we are fucked.

  22. Seems like a strange comparison and I’m not sure what the point is. Why would anyone trust politicians? Everything they say is spin.

  23. Youngsters are naturally more stupid, though. Like, if I met my 11 year old self in some time-travelling wacky adventure, after about 2mins of mental interaction with myself I’d be like, “Jesus wept, this kid is fucking dumb!”

And it would be the same for all of you reading this, too! Don’t lie! If you met your younger self, you’d hate yourself even more than what you may do already!

It’s basic science, if you consider the fact that every individual atom that makes up your entire biological body and everything about you, is changed and replaced at the molecular level every 10 years or so, meaning that you’re literally a different person to the one you was 10 or so years ago. And the older you are, the more different you’re going to be, compared to your younger self. Plus, your mind hasn’t absorbed nearly as much information in your younger days than what you’ve picked up since those early days of your existence, which means you’re literally more intelligent than you were at the age of 11.

Face it, your younger self, my younger self, everybody’s younger self was as dumb as a bag of rocks!
