LynnMall has been approached for comment.
One witness said yesterday that she saw “plumes of black smoke” in the sky while driving through New Lynn.
As the shopper drove into the mall carpark, she saw fire engines at what looked like a turning bay outside Woolworths.
“They were putting out the fire right by the mall,” she said.
A worker told the witness the mall had been evacuated for about 10 minutes.
“People basically gave up on their shopping and went home. But it was really busy.”
“There are some who were waiting outside mall entrances, and it’s a bit awful.
“So the streets, all around it … it was choked with cars.”
