  1. *The government said it would be increasing the number of visas issued.*

So basically we are going to need the same level as we had before Brexit making the whole thing a waste of time and money

  2. Oh look, a sector that largely votes Conservative and was pro brexit reaping what it sows. Boo hoo

  3. Wait! People don’t want to pick carrots in the pissing rain for 5 quid an hour!! What the world has come to!?

  4. Questions that should be asked every time when these stories come up:

    1. How did you vote in the EU Ref?
    1. How did you vote in the last GE?
    1. What package are you offering the pickers?

If it’s “Leave”, “Tory”, and “Minimum wage less deductibles” then the reporter should just snort, close their notepad, and depart.

One small glimmer of fairness, one reason wages are so low is because supermarkets hold such a stranglehold of farm gate prices.

Must admit though, I can’t see “Pick your own asparagus” being popular. :-S

  5. That’s what they get for ditching local workers for cheap bussed in eastern Europeans, paying them minimum wage and making deductions for sharing caravans.

  6. Some decades ago the welfare system supported seasonal work for native Brits, then it was ‘reformed’. Cheap overseas labour replaced that, and we know what happened to that.

  7. And what a policy! Yes, he would rather have the rich less rich provided the poor were poorer. That is the Tory policy. Yes it came out – he didn’t intend it to but it did.

  8. Most of the time the wages are shit and the conditions worse. They really only have themselves to blame, relied on east european labour now pay the price.
During lock down thousands of people applied but got told no jobs avaliable. They didnt want them then becsuse they still had eu workers shipped in.

  9. Tories already working on a solution, if you have a big enough Farm you can request inmates from the prison system which will work for peanuts, Taxpayer pays for transport etc, and the guards and the money they make goes half to the prison owner and half to the government and some scraps pennies per hour go to the prisoner. G4S was working on that policy pitching it after the “success in the USA” basically modern Slavery… And the Nigels and Jacob Rees moogs will be cheering it… and the Daily shit rag will promote the hell out of it.

  10. Loses 50k – could have spent 20k giving the boys a payrise.

Better still, borrowed to invest the 100k or so for automation.

  11. It should read “Farmer, from near Attleborough, loses £50,000 over shortage of workers to exploit.”

  12. Farmers in that region have a bit of a history of kicking off against oppressive out of touch rulers. He should pull a Robert Kett start a rebellion and march on Norwich!

  13. I wonder what side he voted in the 2019 Election and the EU referendum… Could this be another case of leopards biting a man’s face off?

  14. I love the Reddit take here. He’s down 30 staff, and 50K is supposed to pay for it all? The real issue here is that so many industries were reliant on cheap EU labour – now that it has been removed, the additional cost has to be recouped – and that will come out of the end user pocket – and this is part of the reason why we’re having a cost of living increase.

  15. brexit means brexit …… wooooahhhh god save the queeen and rule Britannia . soooo good to be british…. wave that union jack wooooahhhh all problems resolved

  16. I get that farmers have a shit profit margin due to cost and supermarkets pay them a pittance per item but it seems that most farmers expect people to work for a pittance, live on their farm in a shitty caravan. Most folks want a decent wage or at least, come to work, work, gog home without worrying about their bosses deducting the cost of accomedation, food and water from their wages that pushes them below NMW.

Also, have farmers not heard of temp agencies? I suspect farmers want cheap labour that is willing to work for a pittance.

  17. Pay a liveable wage then they’ll come work for you. Why would they work for sh1t wages when they can get more doing less labour elsewhere? Farmers blah blah. Pay the money get the labour.

  18. As someone looking for more reasons to exercise I would be fine with fruit and vegetable picking on the weekends as a side income and I feel confident in guessing I’m not the only person who feels this way especially with cost of living on the rise. This wouldn’t work for everyone however due to the cost of transport – maybe the government could step in and offer fuel rebates to incentivise this? Ah who am I kidding.
