The case also involves another woman accused of collecting donations, while Latvian authorities continue investigating alleged support for Russia’s military.
Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) has detained a Russian citizen suspected of financing the Russian army, which is waging war against Ukraine. According to investigators, the woman regularly transferred money to support the armed forces of the aggressor state.
Russian Woman Detained in Latvia
The Russian citizen was detained on August 5. She has been living in Latvia for several years. After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the woman responded to online appeals to provide financial or material support for military operations against Ukraine.
The VDD opened criminal proceedings on February 12, 2025. The woman is suspected of financing an armed conflict under Article 77² of Latvia’s Criminal Law.
Latvian law provides for a prison sentence of up to ten years for this offense. A court may also impose probation supervision for up to three years.
Another Suspect Is Involved in the Case
As part of the same investigation, another woman – a Latvian non-citizen – was detained on May 14. Investigators believe she was involved in collecting funds and other material assets for the Russian armed forces.
According to the VDD, she transferred the collected donations from her bank account to Russia.
Both suspects were remanded in custody as a preventive measure. Latvia’s State Security Service continues its criminal investigation into the case.
