Villa Dorothéa has opened in Lisbon’s Lapa district, occupying five interconnected 19th-century houses dating from 1878. Designed by LACASTA Interior Design Studio with stylist Carla Kottmann, the 20-room hotel has been conceived as a small residential enclave rather than a conventional luxury property, with cobbled pathways, courtyards and terraces linking the former fishermen’s houses.

The buildings retain their individual character, with original architectural details and semi-public passageways preserving the feel of a small neighbourhood within the city. There is no formal lobby with guests entering via traditional Portuguese stone-paved paths, passing ceramic references to the area’s fishing heritage and historic tiled plaques.

Inside, the design draws from the architecture of each house, using stone, linen, velvet, wood and marble alongside contemporary furniture and collected objects. Soft colours and natural light give the rooms the character of private residences, while courtyards planted with jasmine and bougainvillea provide calm havens away from the streets of Lapa.

At the centre of the property is The Secret, a 25-seat gastrobar extending from a secluded courtyard to a rooftop terrace. The all-day menu combines Portuguese produce with brasserie influences, serving contemporary small plates alongside Portuguese wines, spirits and cocktails inspired by Luís de Camões’ Os Lusíadas.

Elsewhere, a library curated with Lisbon bookshop Salted Books offers books, chess and backgammon, while a programme of communal suppers, wine tastings and rooftop events is planned throughout the year. Rooms are equipped with yoga mats and accessories, with classes available at nearby LX Portal Yoga Studio, while in-room Swedish massages can also be arranged.

The hotel’s location makes Lapa part of the experience, with independent restaurants, design shops, studios and cafés within walking distance. Guests can also arrange ceramic workshops, wine tastings and fragrance sessions with local makers.

Villa Dorothéa is the first Lisbon property from Tradition Signature, founded by Jacob Perez Toledano. “We didn’t want to create another luxury hotel designed around protocols and performance,” he explains. “Villa Dorothéa was imagined as a living house.”

A hotel that puts its historic setting and residential character ahead of formal hotel conventions, Villa Dorothéa offers a more authentic way to experience Lisbon.
