He further implored God to restore peace to the people of Sudan. “Let us pray that the Lord may sustain those who are suffering, convert the hearts of those who sow violence, and grant the long-awaited peace,” he said.
The war in Sudan began in April 2023 mainly because of a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Hemedti”).
After the 2019 overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir, the two forces initially shared power, but disagreements grew over how and when Sudan should return to civilian government and, most importantly, how and when the RSF should be integrated into the regular army. Both leaders wanted to maintain their military influence and control over the country, while negotiations over a transition to civilian rule broke down.
Rising tensions eventually turned into armed clashes in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan on 15 April 2023, triggering the devastating war that has caused mass displacement, hunger, and a major humanitarian crisis.
According to the recent United Nations report, Sudan continues to experience a severe humanitarian crisis due to the ongoing war between the SAF and the RSF, causing widespread destruction, displacing millions of people, and worsening existing humanitarian challenges. Climate-related disasters, including droughts and floods, have further increased communities’ vulnerability, while famine in some areas has placed millions at risk of starvation.
The crisis highlights the urgent need for humanitarian assistance, international support, and sustained efforts to achieve peace and stability in Sudan.
