Jackson County’s unfinished Bellefonte Nuclear Plant could be utilized for future nuclear development, depending on the outcome of ongoing negotiations between the Tennessee Valley Authority and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
Should an agreement be reached, the TVA-owned site will likely feature multiple BWRX-300 small modular reactors designed and developed by the corporate entity.
“TVA’s current goal is to preserve the Bellefonte site for future development,” TVA spokesman Scott Fielder told 1819 News on Tuesday. “Small modular reactors (SMRs) are among the technologies being considered as we evaluate potential generation options, however, it is important to note that no decision has been made. GE Vernova Hitachi is one partner that TVA is in discussions with to potentially place multiple BWRX-300 units at the Bellefonte site.”
He added, “TVA is a leader in nuclear energy, and we look forward to continuing to work with the Administration to unleash American energy and provide energy security for the nation.”
Those supporting nuclear energy development at Bellefonte, including U.S. Rep. Dale Strong (R-Huntsville), argue that it would increase power generation to help meet growing demand.
“North Alabama is prepared to lead the resurgence of American energy dominance,” Strong said to 1819 News. “President Trump is driving historic investment in our nation’s energy infrastructure, and the Tennessee Valley’s workforce is equipped to answer the call. Jackson County and our entire region stands ready to unleash Bellefonte’s full potential.”
Construction of the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant began in 1975 but was halted in 1988, 13 years later, after electricity demand in the region dropped to a level much lower than originally predicted. The site has since sat abandoned.
