Warsaw’s airlift plans are expanding beyond transport alone, with a proposed fleet that could reshape Poland’s role in allied operations.
Poland’s Ministry of National Defence is in talks to acquire Airbus A400M heavy military transport aircraft, as well as tanker aircraft based on the same platform. Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defence, Paweł Zalewski, said this on Polish Radio 24.
According to him, the new aircraft are important for maintaining the operational readiness of the Polish Air Force. The purchase of Airbus A400Ms is being considered as part of a large-scale modernization of Poland’s Armed Forces.
Poland Considers SAFE Funding
Paweł Zalewski suggested that the deal could be financed through the EU’s SAFE mechanism. Poland expects to use part of the unused defense funds allocated to European Union member states for this purpose.
Warsaw’s interest in A400M transport aircraft increased after the NATO summit in Ankara in July. A letter of intent was signed there, providing for closer cooperation in the procurement and operation of these aircraft.
In addition to Poland, Belgium, Croatia, Spain, France, Turkey, and the United Kingdom joined the initiative. At the same time, Airbus offered Warsaw a direct delivery of between 10 and 14 A400M aircraft.
Airbus A400M Capabilities
The Airbus A400M is a four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft capable of carrying up to 37 tonnes of cargo. It can take off and land on short, unpaved runways, expanding its potential use in military and logistics operations.
The aircraft can also be converted to serve as an aerial refueling tanker or command post. Poland considers these capabilities important not only for its own Air Force, but also for carrying out NATO missions.
