Romanian forces blew up two Russian drones in the country’s
exclusive economic zone near the Neptun Deep natural gas field in the Black
Sea
, acting Defense Minister Radu Miruta said on Aug. 11.

The drones were spotted more than 166 kilometers east of
Constanta by the crew of a vessel working near the platform. A coast guard ship
carrying explosive ordnance disposal specialists was dispatched to the scene.

Romanian authorities contacted Ukrainian partners about the
drones’ origin. Ukraine confirmed the systems did not belong to it, Miruta said.
Additional debris of unknown origin was also found floating in the area.

To eliminate risks to ships and personnel working at Neptun
Deep, officials decided to destroy the drones with controlled detonations.

Gerbera reconnaissance drones are often used as decoys to
exhaust and overwhelm Ukrainian air defense systems.
