Germany’s move to legalise cannabis expected to create ‘domino effect’

  1. Christ, if only Irish politicians had some sense we could be one of the first countries to legalise cannabis in Europe and develop Ireland as a leader in the sector. Its gonna happen eventually, might as well be there at the start. “The country would also stand to reap significant economic benefits: with an estimated annual domestic demand of 400 tonnes of cannabis, Haucap’s institute predicts Germany stands to gain about €4.7bn (£4bn) a year through additional tax intakes as well as cost savings from no longer prosecuting those who enjoy a spliff or two.”

  2. Ignoring our governments incompetence I can’t see how it doesn’t happen soon Criminalising people for cannabis use is morally wrong and helps no one. The products on the street are more unsafe than they should be.

And it’s not even that unpopular in the public’s opinion

  3. How come we have to wait for other countries to do it first. Why can’t we.

Was the same thing with Covid, the government wouldn’t do anything until have the EU had first.

  4. Even if Germany do legalise cannabis Ireland will take years upon years upon years to legalise it over here we are so stuck in our ways that will take at least 10 years to sort everything out and line everything up to where we would be a nation with legal cannabis

  5. Fine Gael and AGS will never consider this as it could take money away from the UDA and UVF. They’ve spent the last two years creating a market for them.

May aswell ask them to solve the housing crisis. It is the way they want it.

  6. We need to get a referendum going and push change like we did with the 8th and the same sex marriage. Leaving it to the political parties to drive actual change does not work.
Actually packing the weed question into a package vote about other lifestyle issues could benefit

  7. Plenty of people in Marlay Park smoking the other night. People will smoke it regardless of the legality so just legalise it and make money from it. Considering how greedy the government is, you’d think this would be an easy way to make money.

  8. Hopefully. Everyone smokes it. You’re not stopping them. Best thing you can do is make it safer with quality standards and taking the money out of criminals pockets into the economy

  9. It’s illegal thankfully, the drug addicts on here can complain and cry as much as they like it doesn’t change that their degenerate hobby isn’t allowed.

  10. As someone who ended up laced cannabis (in Germany actually), I can’t understand why it’s illegal and they don’t tax it and make it safer. I know people who smoke cannabis and don’t drink; why should they be punished?

  11. Am I reading that correctly, it looks like there is another 2 years before any decision would be made in Germany. No?

  12. I think the reason it’s hard to legalise here in Ireland is because for a long time, the people who strongly Advocate it were complete nutters with bizarre other beliefs that hurt the cause for legalisation, Or they were someone who wouldn’t risk their other agendas or their parties agenda just to get it legalised, Coming to think of it, the strongest voice for it was Luke Ming Flanagan and he’s just an MEP and not a TD, who has a bunch of anti EU issues no one wants to touch.

  13. I’d be all for legalisation if it wasn’t for the fucking disgusting smell. Went to DC a while ago where it’s legalised and absolutely everything smelt like the stuff.

  14. Mad idea I had a while ago was they should legalise it and try get a lot of the industry into Gaeltacht regions to promote tourism and jobs and help revitalise the Irish language
