An explosion at a Gunvor Energy refinery and fuel terminal at the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, on 13 August 2026 killed one person and injured six others. Police said the incident appeared to be a workplace accident, while the circumstances remained under investigation.

Dutch broadcaster reported that a maintenance team had been working on a section of pipes when the explosion occurred. Police established a crime scene as investigators began examining the circumstances of the incident.
Rotterdam police said there was no definitive conclusion on the cause of the explosion and that all possibilities remained under consideration. Police had not identified any immediate indication that the incident was deliberate.
Emergency services attended the site, with ambulances, fire crews and a trauma helicopter deployed following the blast.
The Port of Rotterdam is a major industrial and energy complex containing refineries, fuel storage facilities and other petroleum and chemical infrastructure.
The Dutch Labour Inspectorate is investigating the workplace circumstances, while police continue to investigate the explosion.
