Police issue ‘shelter in place’ alert during an emergency situation in north Omaha
OMAHA, Neb. —
Omaha police are urging people to avoid the area of an emergency situation.
According to police, there is a barricade situation near 38th and Browne streets.
People in the area are urged to stay inside and shelter in place.
According to OPD, the incident stemmed from a shoplifting report at the Westroads Mall just before 7 p.m.
Police said officers were able to identify a vehicle of interest that was seen leaving the mall.
Officers attempted a traffic stop, and the suspect fled.
Omaha police said OPD’s helicopter followed the vehicle to the area of 37th Street and Grand Avenue, where the suspect got out and fled on foot into a home near 38th and Browne streets.
OPD said officers reported seeing the suspect had a gun, and the suspect is believed to still be inside the home.
According to OPD, two people were inside of the home when the suspect went inside. Since then, KETV crews saw two people exit the residence.
Omaha police are attempting to negotiate with the suspect in hopes of a peaceful resolution.
