Alunorte has reached a temporary terminal access agreement with supplier Centrais Elétricas Barcarena (CELBA) following approval to become a self-importer of gas.
The deal follows approval by Brazil’s National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP) for Alunorte to become a self-importer of gas.
The Alunorte refinery temporarily reduced alumina production as a contingency measure after CELBA notified Alunorte of disruptions to natural gas availability.
With the agreement in place, alumina production at Alunorte is now being ramped up to full capacity.
Lost production during the period of reduced alumina production is estimated to be 100,000 to 120,000 tonnes.
Potential Q3 2026 financial impact for Bauxite & Alumina from the reduced production and purchasing gas at prices above the contract price may be USD 75 to 100 million.
Alunorte is also pursuing a long-term solution.
