Northrop Grumman and Aeronix have launched a multimillion-dollar partnership to develop next-generation cryptographic systems for space-based defense platforms.

Under the agreement, the companies will jointly develop cryptographic applications that protect classified data while it is stored, transmitted, and processed aboard military space systems. 

They also plan to invest in specialized encryption devices, adopt modular open-architecture designs, and develop scalable technologies that can be integrated into both existing and future defense platforms. 

They also aim to significantly increase the speed and security of classified data processing and transmission. 

Aeronix C6ISR division president Nate Smith said this is important as “threats to our information and communications are evolving faster than ever.” 

“Our collaboration with Northrop Grumman is built on anticipating those threats and adapting quickly, so our customers have a decisive edge in any mission, whether operating on the ground, in the air, at sea or on space-based defense platforms that require the highest levels of data protection,” he said. 

Improving Space Communications

The Northrop Grumman-Aeronix partnership follows several recent collaborations focused on protecting military communications in space.

In June, UK space firms Shield Space and ClearSpace agreed to jointly develop sovereign technologies that would keep spacecraft operational when communications with ground stations are disrupted.

Earlier, in March, Lockheed Martin and Mitsubishi Electric partnered to develop an anti-jamming payload for Japan’s next-generation geostationary defense communications satellite. The program will replace Japan’s current X-band military satellite while improving secure connectivity, frequency coverage, and interoperability with allied forces.
