A seemingly carefree retreat concealed weapons drills and violent tactics, raising questions about a broader campaign targeting Moldova’s political future.
At first glance, the program at a resort complex in a remote part of Serbia resembled an ordinary summer camp. Participants were offered barbecues, beach volleyball, and time to unwind at a wellness spa aptly named “Relax and Have Fun.”
Yet behind the carefree atmosphere was much more serious training. Men and women were taught how to break through police lines and set buildings on fire. They wore body armor and trained with assault rifles.
Training Under Russian Intelligence Control
It later emerged that the participants’ instructors were operatives linked to Russia’s military intelligence agency, known as the GRU. According to intelligence officials from three countries, the program’s aim was to create a disciplined strike force trained to interfere in electoral processes.
This was not merely about physical training or street unrest. Participants may have been prepared to carry out missions capable of influencing the political situation and election results.
Why Moldova Matters to Putin
Moldova – a small country with a population of around three million – became the target of this activity. Despite its size, it is extremely important to Russian President Vladimir V. Putin.
That is why Moldova has found itself at the center of Russia’s attempts to destabilize it. Preparing people to interfere in elections shows that influence over the country may be exerted not only through political propaganda or information campaigns, but also through organized groups capable of provoking violence and chaos.
This approach turns Moldova into an important testing ground for the Kremlin’s broader strategy. By putting pressure on a small country, Russia can test methods that threaten the stability of European nations and could weaken NATO’s unity.
