SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The war with Iran is continuing to put pressure on global energy markets, with the Strait of Hormuz still a major focus.
According to ABC News reports, the strait remains effectively shut, disrupting the flow of oil and pushing gas prices higher.
South Dakota Senator and Senate Majority Leader John Thune said reopening the strait is the best way to bring those prices back down.
“There have been some great accomplishments there, but ultimately, probably the way, you know, people are going to judge this is, how is it affecting the economy? How is it affecting gas prices? Is the Strait of Hormuz open? And I think that’s got to be the singular focus, clear-eyed focus of the White House and the administration right now is ensuring that we kind of get the shipping lanes open and get the fuel moving again,” Thune said.
Thune said Republicans are facing political and economic headwinds heading into the midterms.
He added improvement in the Iran situation, particularly getting shipping lanes and fuel moving again, could help.
But he also said Republicans need to keep the focus on their candidates and contrasts with Democrats if they want to hold the majority in Washington.
