Romania’s future “minister for family” advocates for abortion rights

  1. Firea is one of the most religious politicians in Romania and this statement comes as an answer for a question asked by an AUR (far right) party

“I will always fight for women’s rights, they must decide and control their own lives and bodies. I will advocate for all women to have access to quality health care, to quality counselling services, to talk to their confessor – if they are religious – to make the best decision for themselves and their body. It does not conflict with my desire to increase the birth rate – we do not increase it at any price,” said Gabriela Firea at the hearings of the joint parliamentary committees on labour and equal opportunities.
“We are not going back to the times before the Revolution,” Firea added, referring to the fact that abortion was banned during the communist period.
Firea also said she supports health education in schools, including notions of sexuality, provided there is family consent.
“I strongly advocate that all children should benefit from health education, including notions of sexuality, but this should be carried out by specialised people – doctors, psychologists, and with the consent of the family. Just as family consent has been sought for religious education. I don’t think a responsible parent can be against this. I agree that together with the specialists we should find solutions so that we no longer have underage mothers, because we are in first place in the EU in this respect,” Firea said.

“Sexuality” here refers to sexual education, not LGBT related stuff. In Romania today, you are by default enlisted in “religious education” classes and a parent need to formally ask for his/her kid to not partake in this class. I do not know how sexual education will be

  2. Ceauseacu’s decree wasn’t only about banning abortions.

Also why do you need family consent for health education? It should be mandatory maybe with an option to skip given you are part of some crazy ass sect.

  3. To be honest after what happened during communist times when abortions were banned only the most crazy fucked up religious ppl here (and most neo-protestants – the American style ones) would want that to return. A good thing she said that, I wasn’t expecting it from her to be so ferm about it. I still can’t stand her though.
