Too many barristers in Irish legal system, report finds

  1. Headline is a bit misleading imo.

The headline says Ireland has twice as many barristers per capita than other comparable countries of a similar size, that’s not inherently the same thing as “too many”.

I would suspect Ireland, as an English speaking EU country with generous tax laws and a significant percentage of the world’s top companies headquartered here on paper is probably going to have more of a demand for legal services than say Singapore, New Zealand, Hong Kong which are the only common law countries I can think of with populations similar to Ireland.

If they’re comparing Ireland to non-common law countries of similar size like Denmark, Austria, Norway, Slovakia then it’s even less pronounced as civil law systems use less lawyers in general due to a non-adversarial system.

For smaller disputes and criminal cases the rurality of Ireland is also going to be a factor. Ireland is divided into circuits consisting of dozens of courts across the country. If an expert in a particular matter of the law is doing a 2-3 day trial in Donegal in the morning they can’t reasonable make it Cork in the same day for an afternoon trial in a similar matter meaning you need more advocates to plug the gap.

I’d like to see Ireland’s number of lawyers per cases in the legal system each year compared to other countries. I think that would paint a more accurate picture

  2. Thank God there is more financial security in being a solicitor, lol. I’m grateful I got a training contract at a Big 5 firm this year. The formation of Chambers like in the UK would definitely improve the accessibility to becoming a barrister. However, it will definitely be ridiculously competitive. Probably more so than a training contract to become a solicitor as I imagine there will be less vacancy. It’s a shame. I know a lot of people who would have become barristers instead of solicitors if it wasn’t for the fact that there is very little money at the start. It’s a rich man’s game.
