Like all rail projects in this country, it’ll go through 7 years of planning, High Court objections from mildly inconvenienced locals and finally get approval and a railway procurement order.
Then the government changes its mind and shelves it indefinitely.
We need capital infrastructure badly in this country and particularly Dublin, Cork and Galway are struggling. Let’s skip all the planning B.S. on capital infrastructure projects and just build them. Otherwise we are just pissing money away on consultants, planners, solicitors and barristers. I don’t begrudge them, it’s not their fault the system is banjaxed.
Why were we able to get motorways 100km+ built no problem over the last 20 years but anything to do with rail just doesn’t happen? Or TDs go fucking nuts for bypasses but oppose everything else.
This country has a hard on for roads, which just means more people use cars, we should have been shifting towards public transport decades ago but they just wont let it happen.
A billion well spent imho. Has to happen quickly because DART+ West and Metrolink (as well as DART+ South West) are all codependent projects when it comes to Glasnevin Junction.
I don’t think people realise how important these projects are for the country nationally. If we get them done right it’ll be the country’s first attempt at building even the most modest heavy rail infrastructure since independence. It’s scandalous that it’s taken this long but that’s very much down to the fact we’ve been led by parties who adored the car.
Let’s hope this is the beginning of something special for Dublin’s transport network.
I’ll believe it when I see it, they always shelve any plans to bring the dart/metro to West Dublin.
Sure, I’ll believe it when I see it. Bought an apartment in Santry woods many moons ago, part of it was all “Coming soon the metro!”
I’ll be dead and buried before it happens.
