My great grandfather fought on the somme. Remembering Irish men who fought and died in the first world war should be a very obvious thing to build a “shared identity” around (obviously theres different reasons why people enlisted but they all suffered the same). Fair play to her.
Fuck that imperialist bullshit. Don’t engage with that nonsense. Don’t praise colonial wars.
Will it make any difference to the more-British-than-the-British-themselves types?
I’ve no problem with anyone remembering anyone who died in war. Remembering the footsoldiers of the British Empire isn’t for me, but if others feel it necessary, bash away at it. Not my business.
Where it becomes an issue is where it becomes compulsory like the Poppy thing is in the UK.
The correct thing for a leader to do. Fair play.
Most Irish men fighting in WW1 did so because they believed they would be rewarded with Home Rule. It’s not their fault that events overtook them and that that aspiration was well out of date by the time they came home.
4,000 Irishmen died in that battle of 300,000 dead.
May we never return to that madness.
She’ll be wearing a poppy next.
The richest comment section, the sheer difference in attitude when it’s a shinner taking part in one of these commemorations and not a FFG head. Absolutely gas.
