Hi from Turkey, as we’re all aware the “flavor of the month” for Turkish and Greek relations are centered around “islands and guns”. There’s been a lot of discussion about this – and I’m sure we’re all tired of reading / contributing to them by now.
Yesterday AA (Anadolu Ajansı, Turkish news agency) detailed an article on how the paper “TOVIMA” revealed “NATO documents” which actually strengthened the Turkish viewpoint.
Being skeptical I went “yea right” and found said article – translated it and read through it. While at first glance it DOES look like there are bits that supports the Turkish narrative I’m not quite sure this holds up. The articles translation seems bizarre and most of it was lost on me.
So in summary, can you guys tell me if TO VIMA is a paper to be respected? Also, what the article actually says?
As always, please stay safe, have a nice summer.

Nothing to worry about mate. Have some greek coffee with baklava and have a nice day. <3
NATO has been playing the game both ways trying to please Greece or turkey at times.
There are only two questions that need to be asked about the islands.
1) Does turkey accept that the islands are greek and thus Greece has the sovereign right to arm or de-arm or do whatever it pleases with her Islands.
if the answer is no (dispute over whether the islands are or should be Greek or if Greece has the sovereign right to do whatever she pleases with her Islands), then the second question is :
2) Is turkey willing to go to war over this?
Because as it stands the islands are sovereign Greek ground and Greece has the right to do whatever it pleases on them, and no amount of angry statements and speeches can change this.
> can you guys tell me if TO VIMA is a paper to be respected?
Yes – as much as any newspaper I suppose.
> Also, what the article actually says?
The translation seems on point, more or less. The article is primarily descriptive rather than taking a stance – it goes over the Turkish actions since 1957.
> Η Αγκυρα θεωρεί, κατά μία – μειοψηφική στην ελληνική πλευρά – άποψη δικαίως με βάση τις προβλέψεις του Μνημονίου Παπούλια – Γιλμάζ, ότι η Αθήνα «κλείνει» αυτές τις περιοχές για μεγάλα χρονικά διαστήματα παρά τα συμφωνηθέντα
This, badly written extract, comes closest to justifying but not supporting Ankara’s policy. It roughly translates as:
“Ankara *rightly*, according to one view – a minority view *on the Greek side* – holds that Athens “blocks” these areas for long periods despite what had been agreed in the Papoulia – Yilmaz memorandum
το Βήμα is a well known and pro-NewDemocracy(=government) newspaper
this article seems like an early, government originated leak of what’s planned. just to cultivate the mood of change
NATO has no legal jurisdiction on the greco-tourkish disputes and it would be a giant mistake if our baklava politicians agree to let them interfere especially because NATO is pro turkish and it is highly likely that they will advocate for turkey interests. The only international governing body that has a legal right to give a verdict is the international court of justice in Hague the one which turkey is refusing to go.
