Donald Trump has declared the Strait of Hormuz de-mined and open for business.

“The Hormuz Strait is open and operating,” he said on Tuesday US time, as a 60 day period for negotiating with Iran came to an end with little progress made.

However, marine traffic through the waterway remains strained as despite Mr Trump’s insistence it is open, vessels continue to be attacked.

Meanwhile, the US envoy for Syria has lashed out at Israel condemning an “unnecessary escalation” after it bombed one of the country’s air bases.

In sharp words, Tom Barrack said Syria had not “adopted a predatory posture” towards Israel and “in fact, (has) repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation”.

It’s another sign of the White House’s increasing frustration with the government of Benjamin Netanyahu.
