Ram Trucks Australia continues to expand its full-size pickup lineup with the introduction of the 2026 Ram 1500 Express Black Edition. Returning after a two-year absence, the Express nameplate once again serves as the most affordable Ram 1500 available to Australian customers. However, this time it finds its way “down under” on the fifth-generation truck.

Priced at $109,950 AUD (or about $78,200 USD) before on-road costs, the Black Express costs $32,000 AUD ($22,800 USD) less than the Ram 1500 Laramie Sport and Rebel.
However, Australian HEMI® fans hoping for the return of V8 power will have to continue waiting. Unlike the recently reintroduced HEMI-powered Ram 1500 models offered in North America, the Australian Express comes exclusively with the twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter HURRICANE I6 standard-output (S/O) engine.

A More Accessible Ram 1500
The Black Express significantly lowers the entry point into the Australian Ram 1500 lineup without sacrificing the truck’s full-size dimensions, towing-focused equipment, or powerful HURRICANE engine.
The Black Express also undercuts several competing American pickups sold in Australia. The Ford F-150 XLT starts at $114,950 AUD (or about $81,800 USD) before on-road costs, while the Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Premium begins at $134,990 AUD ($96,000 USD). The Australian Toyota Tundra lineup starts even higher, with the Limited priced from $155,990 AUD (approximately $111,000 USD).

Rock You Like A HURRICANE
Under the Sport Performance Hood is the S/O version of Ram’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter HURRICANE I6. It produces 313 kilowatts (420 horsepower) and 635 Nm (468 lb-ft) of torque.
The engine is paired with an 8-speed 8HP75 automatic transmission and a part-time four-wheel-drive (4WD) system. Unlike the more expensive Laramie Sport, Rebel, and Limited, the Black Express does not include a full-time 4WD Auto setting.
Each of the HURRICANE’s two turbochargers supplies three cylinders. Using two smaller turbochargers helps them respond more quickly than a single large turbocharger, producing boost at lower engine speeds and reducing lag.
Ram says the engine maintains at least 90% of its peak torque from 2,350 rpm through redline. Its aluminum block, forged-steel crankshaft, forged-steel connecting rods, and cross-bolted steel main bearing caps were engineered to withstand high cylinder pressures while keeping the engine’s overall weight under control.
Ram Trucks Australia also claims the 420 horsepower HURRICANE uses approximately 12% less fuel than the outgoing 5.7-liter HEMI V8. And that sounds about right.
Those looking for more power, will have to step up to the more expensive Ram 1500 Limited which has the high-output (H/O) version of the HURRICANE, producing 403 kilowatts (540 horsepower) and 707 Nm (521 lb-ft) of torque.

Blacked-Out Exterior Treatment
Although it is the least expensive Ram 1500 in Australia, the Black Express does not look like a bare-bones work truck from the outside. Its standard blacked-out appearance gives the pickup an aggressive look without adding unnecessary chrome.
Exterior highlights include:
Black grille and grille surround
Black Ram badging
Black door handles
Black mirror caps
Mopar black fixed side steps
Dual black exhaust tips
20-inch black aluminum wheels
Mopar Sport Performance Hood
Automatic LED reflector headlights
LED front fog lights
A spray-in bedliner, fully damped tailgate, kick-down bed step, heavy-duty tow bar, four cargo tie-down points, and full-size spare wheel are also included.
The Black Express has a maximum payload rating of 1,014 kilograms (or 2,235 pounds). Removing the RamBox bedside storage compartments found on certain higher trim levels also provides a slightly wider cargo box.
Customers can choose from six exterior colors:
Bright White
Diamond Black
Forged Blue
Granite Crystal
Silver Zynith
Molten Red

A Simpler, Work-Focused Cabin
The most noticeable cost-saving measures are found inside. While the more expensive Ram 1500 models sold in Australia emphasize luxury and technology, the Black Express adopts a simpler and more functional layout.
Black cloth bucket seats are standard, along with manual front-seat adjustment and a plastic steering wheel. Heated, ventilated, and power-adjustable seats are not included. However, the cabin retains the massive center console, flat rear floor, generous passenger room, and numerous storage areas that have helped make the Ram 1500 a practical long-distance truck.
The rear bench can be folded upward to create additional interior cargo space. Two storage compartments beneath the rear floor provide room for smaller items.
A 7-inch driver information display sits between traditional analog gauges. The center stack contains an 8.4-inch Uconnect 5 touchscreen rather than the 14.4-inch vertical display installed in the other Australian Ram 1500 models.
Despite the smaller screen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto™ remain standard. The Black Express also receives a 6-speaker audio system, two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, and a 12-volt outlet.
One advantage of the simpler infotainment system is the use of traditional physical climate controls. Large switches also provide direct access to frequently used towing and parking-assistance functions.
The absence of the front-passenger display creates room for a large storage shelf across the dashboard. The Black Express also retains the deep center console with its adjustable upper tray and larger storage compartment below.

Safety And Towing Technology Remain Standard
Ram has removed many luxury features to reach the Black Express’ lower price, but the truck still includes several important driver-assistance and towing technologies.
Standard safety and towing equipment includes:
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Active Lane Management
Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Active Braking
Pedestrian and Cyclist Emergency Braking
Blind-Spot Monitoring (BSM)
Rear Cross-Path Detection
Trailer Detection
ParkView Rear Backup Camera
Front and Rear ParkSense Park Assist
Trailer Brake Controller
Heavy-Duty Hitch
A power-sliding rear window is also included despite the truck’s otherwise simplified equipment list.

How It Compares With Other Ram 1500 Models
Moving up to the Laramie Sport adds full-time 4WD, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated seating, a panoramic sunroof, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 14.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen.
The Laramie Sport also includes a 10.25-inch front-passenger display, dual wireless phone chargers, a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, power-retractable side steps, a power tailgate, and RamBox storage compartments.
The Rebel shares the Laramie Sport’s $141,950 AUD ($101,000 USD) starting price but focuses more heavily on off-road capability. It adds an electronic locking rear differential, 18-inch wheels, 32-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, Bilstein dampers, skid plates, steel bumpers, and a unique red-and-black interior.
At the top of the lineup, the Limited starts at $159,950 AUD (or about $113,800 USD). It adds the 540-horsepower HURRICANE H/O, an electronic locking rear differential, 22-inch wheels, air suspension, upgraded LED lighting, a digital rearview mirror, massaging front seats, and ventilated rear seats.

Converted To Right-Hand Drive In Melbourne
Like every Ram officially delivered in Australia, the Black Express begins life as a left-hand-drive (LHD) pickup before undergoing an extensive factory-backed conversion.
Walkinshaw Automotive performs the approximately 12-hour right-hand-drive (RHD) conversion process in Melbourne using factory-approved components. The company is also responsible for engineering and developing the Ram models offered through Ram Trucks Australia.
This process allows Australian buyers to purchase a right-hand-drive Ram 1500 backed by the official Ram Trucks Australia network rather than relying on a privately imported and independently converted truck.

Still No HEMI For Australia
The Black Express gives Australian buyers a considerably less expensive way to enter the Ram 1500 lineup, but its arrival also highlights the continued absence of the 5.7-liter HEMI V8. Ram has reintroduced the HEMI in North America following strong customer demand, but Ram Trucks Australia has not announced whether V8-powered models will return to the local market.
For now, all four Australian Ram 1500 variants: the Black Express, Laramie Sport, Rebel, and Limited; rely on the twin-turbocharged HURRICANE I6 engines.
The Black Express may lack the upscale materials and extensive technology found in its more expensive siblings, but it retains the Ram 1500’s spacious cabin, substantial road presence, practical cargo capacity, and strong powertrain. More importantly, its $109,950 AUD starting price (or about $78,200 USD) makes a full-size Ram pickup accessible to a broader group of Australian customers.
