I read an article recently that said Portugal is attracting expatriate millennials from around the world. Apparently it offers “ second chances” https://www.flatio.com/blog/why-is-portugal-attracting-millennials-from-around-the-world
Have you noticed this? Do many millennials come form other nations to enjoy Portugal?
What does Portugal offer that other nations don’t?

Good weather and low cost of living^1.
1- Unless you live with the typical portuguese salary.
I am glad to hear that Portugal offers second chances. However, doesn’t seem to be great in order to offer first chances 😀
Portugal is attracting people that have a wage outside Portuguese borders and are seeeking a quite, safe place to live, with sunny wheather and friendly neighbours.
Portugal is great for foreigners w money that don’t have their income and taxes linked to Portugal.
… but for Portuguese? well – we have the unfortunate situation of having an emotional attachment at this place…. because if we were rational, we’d probably be some place else 🙂
That’s what Portuguese natives want to see: their country being taken over by foreigners and having even less access to housing and decent salaries.
Portugal: the ultimate resort country.
Yes americans are coming in droves and apparently middle class in america is rich, we’re screwed. i feel sorry for the ones who want to move but cant
It’s a ship of Theseus situation.
Our millenials go to Germany and the UK, and theirs come here to surf, see the sun ~~enjoy lower taxes on their income, whilst the proles don’t~~ , immerse themselves in the culture.
Fico com depressão quando vejo estes artigos
It is quite a hot spot for them, they’re burning like the forests do during the summer.
For more info, u/tsimoes1985 gave you a good summary; if you have money, Portugal is cheap; if you like surfing, amazing sun and beaches everywhere; I guess you enjoy eating, there is plenty of tasty things and less and less portuguese who can afford them, so more for you; if you like people from all over the world, you’ll find them; you don’t even have to like and know any portuguese people anymore; it’s as if the entire country (Lisbon, Porto, Braga, everything else is countryside, no one lives there) is like a big international airport but even better because you can surf and all the other nice things you can do in countries, like building many airports, which is something no one did inside an airport. Yet. Maybe you are creative and you can come here to present that idea to someone, we enjoy that kinda stuff too.
I was born, raised and still live in one of Portugal’s biggest cities and I’m being slowly gentrified out of it, so yes, I have noticed this phenomenon.
When Portugal gives a “second chance” to some upper-class millenial coming from abroad, it’s taking away a chance that wasn’t even given to the locals to begin with.
I don’t think that people coming to live here is a bad thing. What is definetly a bad thing is their willingness to (most likely unknowingly) make things harder for us just because they can afford to. A very clear example of this is the way the housing market currently works.
Thanks. A Kiss and a Cheese.
