A sudden overnight escalation near Poland’s eastern flank prompted a rapid military response, while allied aircraft and defenses watched the skies.
On the night of August 20, Poland placed its fighter aircraft and air defense systems on alert due to Russia’s large-scale aerial attack against Ukraine.
Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command said on the social media platform X that all available forces and resources had been deployed to monitor and protect the country’s airspace. Enhanced measures were introduced primarily in areas bordering Ukraine.
Poland Activated Air Defense and Radar Systems
During the attack, the Polish military scrambled fighter jets and activated ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance assets. These measures were aimed at continuously monitoring the situation near the country’s eastern border.
At around 6:00 a.m. local time, Poland’s Armed Forces Operational Command announced a reduction in the threat level for border areas. Afterward, the aircraft began returning to their bases, while air defense and radar systems resumed normal operations.
No Violations of Polish Airspace Were Recorded
No violations of Polish airspace were recorded during Russia’s massive attack on Ukraine.
The Operational Command also thanked NATO allies, NATO Allied Air Command, and the Royal Netherlands Air Force for supporting Poland’s air defense system.
