Supposedly the IRA did less damage when they blew it up than the army did when they demolished the remains of it.

It wasn’t a bad idea to get rid of the statue of Nelson, but it was sad to lose the pillar itself. There was an internal staircase to the top open for a small fee, and it provided a lovely view over the city centre.
