Life expectancy vs. Health Expenditure (1970-2018) European countries doing quite well.

  1. It seems quite normal for countries to have their life expectancy improved because of progress while cost staying mostly the same (considering inflation is taking into account on this graph).

It tells me that money is used quite well, it goes to science and infrastructure that allow for better health care.

What I don’t understand is how can the USA have that kind of results? Corruption? Capitalism in its worse representation?

Can someone explain this to me? Or correct me if my first assessment is wrong to begin with.

  2. The US stands out in the west as the country with the highest obesity and homicide rate as well as an enormous opioid/fentanyl epidemic. It’s actually surprising that their life expectancy isn’t even lower given these factors. And none of them can be solved by health care spending.

  3. Surprised to see the UK inhabiting the middle of the pack tbh.

The NHS is a black hole of money with shit outcomes at the moment. It really needs cross party support for throwing it in the bin and starting again at this point.

  4. Not surprised tbh. The American system is a legalized scam at this point. Though the Italian system as well is becoming a joke.

Italy was the western country who had the worst outcomes out of COVID, and I could see it with my own eyes why. It’s a joke at this point: incompetence, lack of accountability, medieval practices and also massive underfunding thanks to austerity.

The only reason we still come up high is due to the heritage we have, but the quality and access is going down, fast. Also the push to privatize everything doesn’t help either.

Accessing the public system is getting more and more difficult, I go private to see the same incompetent doctors at 120€ a visit otherwise you get a visit 1 year and a half later when you’re already dead.

It’s very expensive too. I had to do a few blood work, I went to a private lab where you can also access the public system with a doctor’s prescription.

I paid private, avoiding 3hours for going to the doctor. I paid 46€. The lab told me wait, with a public referral it’ll cost you 41€. That’s it, 5€ of fucking discount, but having to do an endless queue for a couple of blood exams. Thanks a lot.
