Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany Johann Wadephul hopes the United States will play an active role in the peace process regarding Ukraine and will hold talks next week with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
He made these remarks at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Sybiha in Kyiv on Saturday.
“How this war ends is a decisive issue for the future of Europe. And it must end in such a way that it is not the right of the strongest that prevails, but the strength of the law. It is in this spirit that I am holding discussions with my European counterparts, as well as with colleagues from outside Europe, regarding continued support for Ukraine, particularly in the form of air defense systems,” the minister said.
He said he will continue negotiations with his counterparts next week, and therefore the impressions from this trip to Ukraine are of great importance. In particular, Wadephul said “it is here that the urgency of supporting Ukraine with additional air defense systems becomes evident once again.”
“Early next week, I will also discuss these issues with my American counterpart, Marco Rubio. I hope the United States is prepared to play an active role in negotiations with Ukraine as well. We need to be willing to think outside the box. We need to support Ukraine,” the minister said.
He also noted that not only Ukrainians but also the rest of the world is suffering from Russia’s war against Ukraine, citing the impact of grain supplies on Africa and the Near and Middle East.
“That is why there are many countries interested in resolving this conflict. And this fall, we must once again seek out such opportunities,” the minister said.
