As of Tuesday morning, about 31,000 consumers in Latvia remained without electricity following a storm that hit the country last weekend. Power engineers have already managed to restore electricity supply for more than 250,000 customers — over 90% of the consumers affected by the outages.
This was reported by LSM English, citing distribution network operator Sadales tīkls. The company said it had repaired around 700 instances of damage to the electricity distribution network, but restoration work is ongoing.
Largest outages
The largest number of consumers without electricity remained in the municipalities of Ogre, Aizkraukle, Preiļi, Rēzekne, Jēkabpils and Bauska. On Monday evening, after damage to the main grid was repaired, electricity supply was restored in the city of Preiļi and for about half of customers in the particularly hard-hit Preiļi municipality.

The storm brought down large trees onto wires, tore down lines and damaged power grid poles. Specialists are using drones to inspect hard-to-reach areas.
More than 200 crews involved
More than 200 repair crews have been deployed to deal with the consequences of the severe weather. Sadales tīkls has mobilized all available resources and has also received assistance from crews of the Estonian distribution system operator Elektrilevi.
According to the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre, on August 22 and 23 the country was hit by the strongest summer storm since at least 1966. One person died in Jelgava during the severe weather due to the collapse of a new building. Several other people were injured by falling trees and branches, while two firefighters were injured during rescue operations. At the peak of the storm on Sunday morning, electricity supply was interrupted for approximately 277,000 households.
