  1. There is probably a 3 months grace period for shops to adapt.

Same for the new e-scooter law in Brussels.

In Belgium you can pass laws. It’s something else to enforce them.

In a way this is the Belgian freedom.

  2. My local frituur is like this. Has card reader but its always out of order and they only accept cash. Should report them, but then who is gonna make my Bicky

  3. Good. And not only debit cards. Also credit cards.

Was visiting Belgium (I live in the USA). Couldn’t even pay at Albert Heijn because they only took debit cards. Walked out. Spent my money somewhere else.

And I hope this abolishes the madame pipi in Kinepolis.

To the downvoters: why? Visitors use credit cards.

People who deal with cash are against cards because of cost. But they don’t realize the cost of cash. Counting. Going to the bank. Insurance. Time.

  4. card paiement doesn’t necessarily means card terminal. One Shop nearby my working place use smartphone to receive paiement without to pay any fee.

  5. Honestly, I don’t like it too much. Sure it’s inconvenient if you never have cash on you. Sure it can be a good measure to combat fraud. But fuck, what kinda bullshit is this for Mariette who opens her café for 4 *gepensioneerden* who come to drink their daily beer. Do we really want Mariette to close her business because she can’t keep up with technology?

I’m sure there’s plenty of good counterpoints, but I just feel sad for these really small businessowners.

  6. For those in the know: is this a Belgian law the legislators came up with or is there an EU directive going in this direction?

I’m asking as the exact same law is valid in Italy from the 30th of June: all shops must accept credit card payments otherwise they will be fined. Even the jokes are similar.

  7. Is there a cut-off or something? The friture next door is like card payments only for 10€ and up.
