A teenage girl is in critical condition after a shooting near a Jefferson County Public Schools stop.

The shooting happened around 8 a.m. Tuesday on Beech Street near Wyandotte Avenue. That’s in Park DuValle just south of Algonquin Park.
Chief Paul Humphrey said they’re pursuing suspect leads. So far, no arrests and the Homicide Unit is investigating due to the severity of the injuries.
“We are asking the community for your help in this. We want to make sure that we bring justice to to this family, as well as make sure that we get dangerous people off the street,” Humphrey said.
The girl is a student at Valley High School, which is within JCPS.
It’s also unclear whether it was random or targeted, but witnesses say they saw a group of teens shoot her, laugh and drive off. Some heard as many as five gunshots.
Gary Bieber, who lives near the scene, told WLKY the girl had injuries to her face.
LMPD is working closely with JCPS Police.
Mayor Craig Greenberg said the Office of Violence Prevention will be utilized at the bus stop, and they will also enhance security there for days.
He and JCPS Superintendent Dr. Brian Yearwood spoke at the mayor’s weekly news conference.
Both of them gave passionate pleas for an end to the violence.
“This is a horrible act of violence, a tragedy that no parent, no friend, no community should ever have to deal with. But here we are in Louisville again, where there’s another heartbreaking act of violence at a school bus stop, which should be a positive time in our children’s life as they begin another productive, enriching day at school,” Greenberg said.
Yearwood said it’s his top priority to make sure students get to school safely and are then safe at school.
“This is unacceptable. This action should not be taking place in our city. We are better than that. Louisville is much better than that. JCPS is better than that,” he said.
