
Thus, since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, four Latvian volunteers have already died, according to the archive of the LETA agency.
The press secretary of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diana Eglīte, reported that the Latvian embassy in Ukraine has not yet received official confirmation from Ukrainian military authorities regarding the death of Šampinš.
The Latvian Ministry of Defense also stated that they are awaiting official information from Ukrainian authorities. At the same time, the agency confirmed that Šampinš had not previously served in the National Armed Forces of Latvia.
As previously reported, Nikita Tarenov with the call sign “Latvian” died in Ukraine in 2025.
In 2024, Latvian volunteer Edgars Platonovs, born in 1983, was killed.
In the autumn of 2023, another volunteer — former serviceman of the National Armed Forces of Latvia Vitaly Smirnov — died as a result of a Russian drone strike in the Donetsk region, near the city of Lyman.
