England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and Ireland population comparison from 1821 to 2019

  1. Irelands population took a bit of a dip in the 1800’s. Can’t remember why, something to do with us not liking potatoes, I think.

  2. In 1821 the island of Irelands population was 65% of Englands. If that ratio had been maintained Ireland would have a population of 35 million now instead of 7 million odd. Wales’ population quadrupled in the time period and Wales might be a better metric as one could say England and the SE in particular was a magnet for immigration from the Colonial Empire which bumped up the population. Still, a quadrupling of population like Wales would still give us 4x 7 million = 28 million people by now.
