HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — President Donald Trump and Senator Ted Cruz, once opposing candidates for the White House, have since made peace to advance the MAGA movement in the Capitol.
Cruz, who finished as the Republican Party’s runner-up in the 2016 presidential primary, has aligned his platform with Trump’s agenda and promoted their shared goals to a national audience. The always outspoken senator uses his millions of X followers and the evolving media landscape to make known his thoughts on the president’s latest actions and the Democratic Party he demonizes.
As Trump’s time in the White House winds down, though, Cruz appears to be seeking a coveted place to wield his MAGA megaphone: the Oval Office his ally will leave. The senator said during a recent interview with Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick that he wants to be president.
“I wanna be right in the middle of these fights, and if you’re gonna do that, the right place to do it is where you and I are,” he added. “It is in elected office.”
Trump has so far supported Cruz, though he appears to prefer Vice President JD Vance or State Secretary Marco Rubio to succeed him. Asked Thursday whether he thought Cruz could win the White House, Trump gave a lukewarm response.
“I would say that he’s very talented. He’s a very good friend of mine,” the president said. “I think he might do good, yeah. He’s a very tal—he’s a talented guy.”
