IRON COUNTY, Wis. (KQDS-TV) — Line 5 remains closed after a flat-bed truck rolled over into a pipe August 25, releasing natural gas liquids (NGL’s) into the area.
The truck was delivering equipment to the work site where crews were working on a valve for Line 5.
The truck was parked and unoccupied when it rolled into the open excavation of the line.
No one was injured in the incident.
The damaged pipe was isolated, and Line 5 was shut down.
A previous press release sent Wednesday said Enbridge estimates Line 5’s return to service between August 31 and September 5.
The Iron County Sheriff set a temporary no-fly zone out of caution for crews responding to the leak.
About 150 people are supporting the response, including Iron County Emergency Management, the Iron County Sheriff’s Department, the Ashland and Superior Hazardous Materials teams, local fire departments from Gurney-Saxon, Oma, Bad River and Kimball, and Enbridge response personnel.
The press release also noted that natural gas liquids are not natural gas; they are hydrocarbons separated from natural gas during processing.
NGL’s are used in propane, butane, and thousands of everyday products like plastics, medical supplies, electronics, and clothes.
